Best Things to Do With Toddlers
(Ages 0–3)
NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher
This is probably one of the biggest hits among families visiting the area. The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher touch tanks allow toddlers to get hands-on experience by petting stingrays and other marine life, as well as come face-to-face with fascinating underwater creatures, providing a safe but thrilling way to experience the marine world. Other fun sights for little ones, and adults too, include the massive open-ocean shark tank, alligator exhibits, and the "Otters on the Edge" outdoor exhibit.
Beyond the underwater world, the aquarium also features a dinosaur exhibit that is especially popular with young boys and girls, along with a butterfly house.
Pro tip: Reserve tickets online ahead of time during the summer months. The aquarium is also a great alternative for rainy days or especially hot afternoons.
Children's Museum of Wilmington
Located roughly 20 miles away, this is a lifesaver during rainy days or hotter afternoons, too. The museum focuses on interactive play and sensory learning that really captures the attention of younger kids. Toddlers can enjoy three floors of interactive, hands-on exhibits specifically designed to be kid-friendly.
In addition to the indoor exhibits, the museum features a splash pad that provides active sensory play for little ones. Its location is also a major draw because it sits near the downtown waterfront, allowing families to walk over and see large boats and bridges, which are often entertaining for toddlers.
Wilmington Railroad Museum
Toddlers and kids of all ages who love trains usually have a blast at Wilmington Railroad Museum.
For toddlers, the biggest draw is usually the interactive children's play area packed with Thomas the Tank Engine toys, wooden train tables, and plenty of space to move around freely instead of just staring at exhibits behind glass. Little kids also get completely absorbed by the massive model train displays featuring moving locomotives, tunnels, tiny towns, bridges, lights, and miniature people. Many parents are surprised by how long children stay entertained simply watching the trains loop around the tracks. So if you come with little train aficionados, be patient.

Best Things to Do With Young Kids (Ages 4–8)
Carolina Beach Boardwalk
Summer evenings here usually include carnival rides, arcade games, Ferris wheel views, homemade fudge, ice cream, live music, and Thursday fireworks. In other words, there are plenty of things happening that keep both young kids and parents happy and entertained.
Carolina Beach State Park
Usually called a "treasure trove of nature," Carolina Beach State Park is the setting for many outdoor adventures suitable for families traveling with young kids.
The park is famously home to the rare Venus flytrap, a carnivorous plant native only to a 60-mile radius of the area. Kids get excited walking through the Flytrap Trail searching for the plant in its natural habitat.
Other major highlights for active kids include climbing the 50-foot Sugarloaf sand dune and exploring trails that weave through diverse landscapes, including lush forests and sandy dunes, giving little ones the chance to spot various animal species.
Shipwreck Neon Mini Golf
This incredible indoor course features a pirate and under-the-sea theme brought to life with glow-in-the-dark neon colors under black lights. It's every bit as chaotic and entertaining as it sounds, and the two 9-hole courses combined with the immersive visual effects create a magical experience for everyone.
Coquina Rocks
The Coquina Rocks are a unique natural attraction located along the shoreline between Kure Beach and Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. These beautiful shell formations are only visible during low tide, so make sure to check tide tables carefully before heading out.
Once there, young kids love walking through these ancient shell formations while searching for tiny sea creatures hidden among the rocks. It truly feels like a miniature coastal treasure hunt.

Best Things to Do With Older Kids (Ages 9–12)
Tony Silvagni Surf School
Traveling with little adventurers? A surfing lesson is one of the best and safest activities for older kids wanting to try something a little more radical.
The school is led by Tony Silvagni, a former Olympian and professional surfer. He works alongside a team of expert instructors to provide high-quality guidance for students eager to catch waves in Carolina Beach. The warm and encouraging atmosphere gives children the confidence to push themselves, make new friends, and develop a genuine love for the sport.
There are several types of programs available, including surfing camps, group classes, and private lessons.
Fort Fisher State Historic Site
Older kids usually love the mix of historical intrigue and outdoor exploration at Fort Fisher State Historic Site. The site brings American history to life through interactive exhibits, artifacts, and an interpretive outdoor trail that tells the story of the largest land-sea battle of the Civil War. One sight that tends to impress visitors of all ages is the massive earthen fortifications and towering cannons scattered throughout the grounds.
And the fun does not stop with the history lesson. The fort sits against a beautiful backdrop of ocean and marsh landscapes, giving families plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure afterward. Kids can continue exploring hiking trails, spotting birds and wildlife, or simply running around the wide-open recreation areas surrounding the fort.
Carolina Beach Inshore Adventures
Fishing trips around calmer waters are a safe and fun way for older kids to learn the fundamentals of casting lines and maybe even reel in their very first catch.
Beyond fishing, these tours also offer great opportunities to spot playful dolphins in their natural habitat, along with various other sea creatures.
Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park
Located on Oleander Drive in Wilmington, just a 23-minute drive from Carolina Beach, Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park is packed with indoor and outdoor activities capable of filling an entire afternoon with fun. You and your vacation crew can enjoy water slides, go-karts, laser tag, mini golf, and much more together.
Kayaking to Shark's Tooth Island
A huge hit for kids interested in fossils and treasure-hunt-style activities, these guided tours take families out to search for prehistoric shark teeth and marine fossils along the island.
Beyond the thrill of combing the shoreline for ancient treasures, visitors also have the chance to spot dolphins along the way.
Several local companies offer tours and charters that visit the island or specialize in shark tooth hunting, including Mahanaim Adventures, Captain Charlie's Adventures, Island Time Water Tours, and Sea Legs Pedal Pub.

Best Activities for Tweens & Teens (13+)
SCUBA Diving Charters
The North Carolina coast is famous for shipwreck diving since it is home to roughly 2,000 shipwrecks, some dating as far back as the 16th century. If your teen is interested in exploring what lies beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, this will definitely be one of the highlights of the trip.
Older teens can join charters exploring underwater wrecks or even hunt for giant Megalodon teeth, which are frequently found along underwater fossil ledges.
Check with local operators like Carolina Beach Scuba for specific dive times, locations, certification requirements, and excursion details.
Freeman Park
On the north end of Carolina Beach, Freeman Park is known for its more rugged and secluded shoreline compared to the main beach areas, where families enjoy 4x4 beach driving and coastal camping. The area is also great for shell hunting and spotting local wildlife.
Heads up: To drive on the beach, you must obtain a permit, which can be acquired at the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area Visitor Center.
iEscape Rooms
This is an interactive adventure is a great way to step away from the typical beach day and work together as a team.
A standout feature of iEscape Rooms is that the puzzles are suitable and accessible for kids of all ages, though tweens and teens usually enjoy them the most and fully embrace the experience. At the same time, the challenges remain engaging enough for adults, too. That balance is one of the attraction's biggest strengths since it allows every family member to contribute to the team's success.
